Firstly, as promised last week, below is the link to book tickets for the exclusive tours of the Jungle Palace, Siegfried & Roy's former home, on August 5th and 6th. This is genuinely a very limited opportunity to visit the iconic home of two of Magic's legendary performers.

https://lasvegasjunglepalace.com/private-tour-of-the-las-vegas-jungle-palace/

I'm writing this on 4th July, a day when all my American friends are celebrating the colonies separation from Great Britain. Even though I've spent a considerable part of my life in USA , and we supposedly speak the same language, well, a similar language anyway, it still surprises me how different the two countries are, in so many ways.

I've just spent a couple of weeks visiting friends in Atlanta, Georgia, a city I'd never previously been to, and truthfully didn't know much about.

It's an impressive city, but very spread out, and I seem to have spent half my time here travelling on freeways, or stuck in traffic. It was very reminiscent of being in Los Angeles in that regard.

And that's when you realise that England is so small by comparison, and so much easier to get around. I don't think the British mentality would put up with sitting in the car for hours on end just to go out to a restaurant for dinner!. I don't believe they have the patience! And they have a far better transport system too.

Obviously London is the exception, but it is now predominantly owned by the Russians, Chinese, Saudis and Indians, and it is too expensive for most British people to live in!

But, before everyone takes me to task for these comments, I have to admit that USA is an incredible country to live in, and is without doubt the land of opportunity, and the weather, at least in Las Vegas, is definitely better than in UK! So, I won't be moving back to England any time soon!

This week we chat with Diego Vargas about Magicians Without Borders. If you are unfamiliar with this organization, then this week's episode will enlighten you and perhaps persuade you to help them in some way. Diego is from Costa Rica but currently resides in California where he is a regular close-up performer at the Magic Castle.

In addition to performing in war-torn countries for families who so desperately need joy and happiness, Diego also performs for hospitals and in prisons. It is interesting to hear him talk about the main differences being that in hospitals, patients have hope. In prison, the inmates have abandoned all hope. This is a very insightful and emotional episode that may indeed move you.

Today I present you my card castles. I'm curious to know who still shows these attractive props in their performance today.

As far as I could find out, it was G. W. Hunter who, around 1882, was apparently the first to come up with the idea of making a house of cards made of individual cards appear all of a sudden. This effect was marketed by the British company Hamley. After that, many magicians developed similar ideas. But in principle, they are all based on playing cards glued together, which can be folded and usually pulled up on a string to form a house of cards.

Among the famous magicians who showed a card castle was the German Kalanag. Who knows of other prominent magicians who showed this effect?

On my YouTube channel I presented some of these card castles which are on display in my museum.

It is interesting that the Swiss magician Peter Marvey made a very large card castle appear at the end of his manipulation act.

In my museum I have exhibited some of the most attractive models.

Until next week

Message by Kent Cummins, Director (US)

Last week I talked about the Ball and Vase, one of my favorite tricks, but I did not mention why I tell my students that it is "The $500 Trick."

It started in 1988, when Larry Birdsell, proprietor of the Clown factory in San Antonio, Texas, produced "The San Antonio Magic Shootout". It was a competition for magicians, with prizes in both stage and close-up. I remember getting advertising in the mail, and thinking that I should enter.

I have always been primarily a stage performer, so of course I entered the stage contest. I was later told by the judges that I would have won if I had not accidentally gone over time. But that's not the story for today.

I didn't have a close-up act, but I wanted to try something new … and I entered the close-up contest. I put together an act that used only tricks found in magic sets, including (of course) the Ball and Vase trick. I used a nice yellow wooden version, with a red wooden ball. In the finale of my act, I made a red silk hanky disappear (using a hank pull instead of the expected thumb tip), and it reappeared in the vase in place of the ball. Ta dah!

I did not win the $1,000 First Place prize, or the $750 Second Place prize, but when they announced the $500 Third Place prize, they said, "The Fantastic Kent Cummins!" My check was presented on stage by Blackstone Junior.

And that is why I call it, "The $500 Trick!"

Information and memorabilia from the San Antonio Magic Shootout are on display at the Fantastic Magic Center.

The Fantastic Magic Center is dedicated to preserving and sharing the art of magic. But I can't do it without your help. My Patreon account is the same place as my free weekly podcast:

9. Objectivity - John Carey #206

Message by John Carey (UK)

It's always nice to have a few mental pieces in your locker, even as a card man! Objectivity is a strong and very easy close up mentalism piece you can carry in your wallet. You will require nine business cards. On the back of each card write the following nine objects:

1. Keys
2. Coin
3. Pen
4. Mobile phone
5. Wallet
6. Sweets
7. Comb
8. Tissue
9. Dice

Set the cards face-down with Keys, Coin and Pen being the top three cards in that order. The order of the other object cards is not important. Ahead of time, place your keys in your right pocket, a big coin in your back pocket and a pen in your left pocket. Take out your object cards and display the faces and different objects casually. Flip the packet face-down and run the top three cards singly in a shuffling action and then shuffle off normally. Comment on how there are actually many ways of mixing and randomizing cards.

We will now utilize Paul Curry's beautiful deal/mix ruse to apparently mix the cards further. Firstly we will demonstrate and then your spectator will 'mix'. State that you can mix the cards further by either dealing a single card face-down or mixing a pair and then dropping that pair down together. Demonstrate this, dealing a single card, then mixing or swapping a pair and continue this until all the cards have been used and lie in a packet on the table. Hand the packet to your helper and walk and talk them through this lovely scam, having them decide whether to deal single cards or mix a pair etc. "They say all good things come in threes." After you say this have your spectator deal a row of three cards from left to right and continue this left to right deal until all the cards have been dealt. The illusion of random mixing with this and the Curry ruse is very deceptive and yet, your three force object cards are the top cards of each of the three packets.

Ask your helper to take the top card of the right end packet and place it sight unseen into their right pocket. Next request they take the top card of the middle packet and place it in their back pocket. Finally ask them to take the top card of the left end packet and place that sight unseen
into their left pocket. Comment on how they mixed the cards, creating a random mixing that nobody could control or influence...

"Before we came here today, I made a prediction. I didn't tell a soul or even write it down. You see, inside my right pocket are my keys." Take out your keys and display them. Have your spectator remove the object card from their right pocket and turn it over, revealing the word keys. "In my left pocket I placed my pen." Take out the pen and have them remove the card
from their left pocket and reveal the word pen on it. "Finally I placed one last object in my back pocket." Remove the coin from your back pocket but keep the hand closed in a fist. Ask the spectator to take out the object card from their back pocket and show the gathering the word coin written on the back. Look down at your closed hand, then look up at your audience and pause. Then dramatically open your hand to conclude this experiment in synchronicity.
