Facebook message from The Society of American Magicians

Pandora's Box is closed. We have gotten news that P.N.P. Dan Garrett (1994-95) has passed away.

Born in Georgia, Dan took up magic as a hobby at the age of 10 and never looked back. While magic was his profession, he kept his love of space and sci-fi throughout his life.

Dan wrote several books on magic, toured the world as a lecturer, was one of the magical Burger Kings produced several magic videos and was a board member of F.F.F.F.

He was a friend and mentor to so many of us in the S.A.M. and the world of magic in general.

He will be missed.

It is with sadness I let you know that Alfred Hayes passed away yesterday he had been suffering ill health for a while now.

Alfred was a wonderful man and for those who have had the privilege to have known him over the years will remember his kindness, wit and stories and his compering of many shows and magic conventions in New Zealand he and Patrick attended.

Patrick Yap his husband has been by his side for many years and our hearts go out to him.

Abbott's Get Together Daily Reports on The Magic Word Podcast

We are "in the cradle" between attending two conventions as we have arrived in Colon, Michigan, for the 85th annual Abbott's Get Together. Over the next few days, we will continue to post daily updates featuring conversations with the organizers, talent, registrants, dealers, and more. This is one of the most unique and "familial" conventions I have ever attended. Listen and find out why.

You can listen wherever you get your podcasts, but to see some photos, read the blog, listen online, and more, please start with the first day report by visiting: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/775-abbotts-2023-day-one then coming back each day for further updates.

This week we also welcome our newest Friend of the Magic Word, First National Vice-President the Society of American Magicians, John Midgley. Thank you, John, and welcome to the group. Your monthly pledge helps defray our many costs associated with producing this podcast including our ability to attend and provide listeners with daily convention reports. If you would like to know more about how you can provide us with your financial support, then please visit: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/fotmw

5. No Stone Unturned - Paul Stone - Article #119

It's that time of year again! Yes, the 'Magic Live' bandwagon once again rolls into town this week, with 1600 magicians from around the world descending on the Entertainment Capital of the World.

Without doubt Stan Allen has built a loyal fan base for what is now an annual convention. I can think of nowhere else that magicians would pay nearly $500 to attend a magic convention, especially one where the line-up of talent is not disclosed before the event!

But such is the reputation and quality of the event that it sells out year after year. And of course, the lure of Las Vegas undoubtedly plays a part too!

For me, the highlight of any magic convention, and particularly Magic Live, is meeting up with old friends, many of whom I only get to see once a year.

As I mentioned last week, I was in Los Angeles to attend the excellent 'Celebration of Life' for Magic Castle legend, Milt Larsen.

It also happened to be 'Future Stars Week' at the Magic Castle, and together with my good friend Diana Zimmerman who, with the help of Cary Grant, started the Junior program at the Castle over 40 years ago, we went along to support these young performers.

What a truly amazing opportunity it is for these aspiring magicians to have the chance to work in such a unique, professional setting. Without doubt, the best way to learn their trade is to get out and perform, and these youngsters do a brilliant job.

Granted, the audiences are kind, and have come to have a fun night out, but there is still a standard that needs to be maintained, and all the performers really step up to the plate.

As talented as they all were, in my opinion there was one young man that stood out. His name is Mathew O'Neill, and he worked in the Close-up room at the Castle.

This wasn't the first time that I'd seen Mathew perform, and I was excited to see how he had developed. His magic is strong and original, but it is his personality and the effortless manner in which he connects with his audience that really impressed me. I predict a huge future for Mathew. Remember, you saw it here first!

A little bit of sad news to finish. This week we lost a close friend, Mel Warkmeister. Probably a name known to only a few magicians. In his performing days, Mel was one of the world's top trapeze artists, and an expert 'catcher'.

Mel and his wife Marianne were very close friends of Siegfried & Roy. Mel flew his own plane, and after he retired from the entertainment business, he would regularly fly around the country to collect various dogs that Roy had bought.

Most of all, Mel was always terrific company and had a wonderful sense of humour, and loved to tell jokes. He will be greatly missed by his many friends here in Las Vegas.

One of the next interesting events in Europe will be the 9th European Magic History Conference, which this time will take place in Belgium, in the beautiful city of Ghent, from 24 to 27 August.

A total of 17 lectures are on the programme, as well as several individual events.

Among others, Paul Kieve will lecture on Servais Le Roy, Kobe van Herwegen will speak on Jen Lambert Pickman, Francois Bost on Robert-Houdin, Charles Green on Ionia and Fergus Roy on Murray.

The 1st European Magic History Conference was launched in Paris in 2005 by Jacques Voignier. However, it should not be overlooked that the first magic collectors' meeting in Europe had already been organised by Eddie Dawes in 1976. Even if he did not call the meetings "European", these collectors' meetings were and still are international.

The organiser of this year's meeting is Kobe vn Herwegen, who has already made a name for himself by publishing magic books about Belgian magic history and about Suzy Wandas.

If you are interested you may still register at: info@emhc2023.com. Space is limited to 120 people.

That's all for today.

Best regards from the most beautiful city in Germany, Hamburg.

The Magic of Numbers

This is my column number 52 for the Magic New Zealand E-zine. Fifty-Two is the number of cards in a deck (not counting the jokers and advertising cards). Ricky Jay did magic with his "52 Assistants." It is the number of weeks in a year. It is the age Houdini was when he dies on October 31, 1926.

Last year I did 52 shows (Well, my calendar actually says 53, but we get at least one joker, right?)

Numbers have their own special magic!

The first magic trick I ever saw was the 21 Card Trick, performed by my dad before I even started school. I love teaching the 1089 Trick (although I don't recommend calling it that when you're performing!).

We know that the number 3 is magical: 3 Bears, 3 Little Pigs, 3 wishes from the genie. "Deal those 21 cards into three rows….."

Do you work with Magic Squares? I have seen magicians for whom numbers are the main part of their act. And I have nearly three dozen books on Math Magic in my library.

How many total books do I have in my magic library? I kept track for the first few hundred, but now there are thousands. If you are in the Austin, Texas, area, drop me an email and we can get together. How many of the amazing exhibits will you want to spend time with?

I am not a student of Numerology, but I do know that numbers matter. The Dewey Decimal Number for magic books is 793.8. I will be 81 years old next year. It will be my 75th year as a magician!

The Fantastic Magic Center is dedicated to preserving and sharing the art of magic. But I can't do it without your help. My Patreon account is the same place as my free weekly podcast:

10. When Two Hearts... - John Carey #207
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)

Romantically themed card effects can play extremely strong for a couple. Just look at how impactful Anniversary Waltz is? Not being much of a user of gaffs I put the following piece together which has proven quite successful.

Take an unusual backed Two of Hearts and stick it inside a small pay envelope. Draw a large question mark on the envelope with a sharpie marker. Keep this envelope inside your pocket. Whenever you want to use or segue into this routine, simply manage any black Two spot to the top of the deck and any Heart card to the face of the deck.

Bring out the envelope flap side upwards and place it on the table. Execute an in the hands riffle shuffle retaining your two card setup and then ask a gentleman to cut off around half the deck and table it in front of himself. Address his lady and execute a slip shuffle retaining the Heart card on the face of this packet. Slip shuffle once more and ask her to call out stop on impulse. Place this packet in front of her.

Direct attention again to the gentleman and pick up his cards. Run the top card of his packet to the bottom with a shuffle and then execute a slip shuffle and ask him to call out stop. Once he does, square up and place the packet back in front of him. "So then, Margaret and Jim, something special brought you together. Relationships are all about sharing the good times and dealing with the not so good times.

Today I need you to work together as a team to create a simple playing card. Now a card is made up of a value and a suit. Jim, would you take a peek at the bottom card of your packet and remember just the value. Lock it into your mind. Margaret, I'd like you to peek at the bottom card of your packet and remember just the suit. Got it? Get it? Good. Now would one of you gather up both packets please and shuffle?" So the above of course is a nice, tight hands off force of both value and suit.

Take your time and be crystal clear with your instructions. Once the deck has been shuffled, take it back and pocket it. "So now you are both thinking of a simple piece of information that nobody in this room, town or even country could know! Jim, what value are you thinking of? Ok and Margaret what suit resides purely inside your mind? So if we take both your thoughts and piece them together, you have effectively created the Two of Hearts. Indeed they do say that two Hearts beat as one..."

Pick up the envelope from the table and turn it over, displaying the question mark on the front. Ask the lady to open the envelope and remove the contents and display. "I guess you two really were meant to be!"
