4. MAGIC Live 2016!
--------------------------------------------
Message by Stan Allen, Editor of MAGIC Magazine
It's still seven months away, and MAGIC Live 2016 is already
92% sold out. If you're thinking of joining us to celebrate
MAGIC Magazine's 25th Anniversary, please sign up today.
And if you're still on the fence, here are a few of the...
Top Ten Reasons People Love MAGIC Live!
#10. Room Rates
Believe it or not, rooms at The Orleans Hotel & Casino
are just $32 each, when you share with a friend (and we
all know that's the best way to attend a magic convention!).
That $32 price is not a typo. And it includes parking, resort
fee, and Internet! Even if you don't want to share a room,
it's only $64 per night. You just can't beat that!
#5. Close-up
The world's top talent is presented in an intimate, custom-built
theater. Without bragging (too much), it's the best venue
for close-up magic to be found at any convention.
#3. Special Events
In the past we've featured cabarets by Dana Daniels, Tim
Conover, David Williamson & John Carney, and David &
Leeman, plus game shows, "Tales of Terror," "Richard
Wiseman's Experimental," "From the Dark,"
a MAGIC Museum, and more.

6. Jon Armstrong Lecture "Wows" Them In Texas
--------------------------------------------
Message by Nick Lewin (US)
On
Monday 18th January, Jon Armstrong stopped off in Austin
Texas for a lecture on his current highly acclaimed lecture
tour. He lectured at the Omni Hotel for the local SAM Assembly
206. Attendance was high and his lecture was a huge success
with all those in attendance. It was everything you could
hope for and more and the tiered lecture room was a perfect
venue for a close-up magic lecture.
Armstrong
is a highly regarded performer/lecturer and a long-term
favorite at the Magic Castle in Hollywood. He has toured
and lectured in many countries and it was very easy to see
why he has created such an impact worldwide. His recent
appearance on Penn & Teller: Fool Us! Where he performed
his signature Tiny Plunger routine has also made him a firm
favorite with non-magician audiences nationwide.
Aside
from some beautifully crafted tricks to learn there was
a surfeit of excellent advice for any magician. Armstrong
is a thinking magician whose analysis of both method and
effect cannot fail to improve the performance of any performer.
He is a master at simplifying a trick to the exact point
where it achieves maximum affect but never going an inch
too far in the direction of oversimplification.
Armstrong
began his lecture with a very effective card under poker
chip that achieved a nice laugh before nailing the audience
with a finale that has to leave any audience gasping at
the obviously skillful final revelation. The explanation
was an object lesson in using misdirection and timing to
make the execution of secret actions logical and practical.
Jon followed this with a rubber band effect that was fast
and effective and really impressed me--- and I am no fan
of rubber band magic!
After
his brief excursion into non-card magic, Jon gave the attendees
a very thorough demonstration of his famous Tiny Plunger
routine which ample showed why this routine has become such
a phenomena. It combines great magic, great situational
comedy into a multi-dimensional routine that gets progressively
baffling as it evolves. It was a highly anticipated highlight
of the lecture and everyone was delighted with the thoroughness
with which he demonstrated every detail involved in the
routine.
Armstrong's
handling of a classic "Biddle Trick" demonstrated
his basic three-part approach to creating strong magic;
these three elements were encapsulated as conviction, intent
and reverence. It was a fascinating triple principle that
beautifully explained why he is such a powerful performer.
A very strong follow my leader effect was also a perfect
example of this three part philosophy of close-up magic.
Two
other gems in the lecture were Armstrong's teaching of his
tabled deck double lift and an amazingly effective and well
thought out twenty-card Out Of The World handling. The variation
of Paul Curry's classic had been re-named Out Of This Blah
Blah Blah by Jon, Believe me there was nothing blah about
this routine---it is a commercial killer.
If
you have a love of good magic I strongly recommend that
you make sure you catch Armstrong's lecture. Your time will
be well spent and you are almost guaranteed to become a
better magician just from his philosophy, not to mention
the great tricks you can learn.

If you perform for children, chances are you have come across
a situation where by a child helper seems perfect for a
routine. You get them up there and they still seem good
and are reacting the way that you would want them to react.
Everything is going fine. Then you start to get into the
routine and suddenly fear starts to overtake the child.
They start to feel nervous, frightened and scared. You sense
it, feel it and know it is happening. But what do we do
about it. Many folks would calm the child down and send
them back to their seat or to their parent. There is nothing
wrong with this at all. However, I feel there is a different
direction you can go in.
First thing we must understand at all times is that kids
are kids. As much as we try and read them there is no guarantee.
A calm child can get nervous and scared very quickly and
that can shock us and catch us off guard. It is a part of
being a child in a strange situation.
One thing we can never do is force the child to continue
on. We can never make them continue with the routine simply
because we may be half way through it. Our love for the
routine and for getting through the show cannot overtake
our common sense that a child is not feeling right.
At that point we must always keep the child's best interest
at heart. Always.
You are the entertainer, do you really want to 1) create
and extend an awkward moment for the kid and the crowd or
2) cause this child to have a bad memory of entertainers
that may last his/her life time?
We must be observant. We must always be reading a child
helper's body language. It is a tell-tale sign of what is
to come. A child who is laughing is one who is having a
good time. If the feet are apart and the hands away from
the body, it is a sign of the child in a relaxed and fun
state. However, if a child gets nervous, shy or scared,
the body language changes dramatically.
You will see a child in this state start to change his/her
body language. The feet and legs come together and the arms
come close to the side or may even become close to a hug.
This is a protective stance for the kid and a sign to you
that the child is not comfortable.
The other thing in this state that we often will hear is
the audience or parent or adults encouraging the kid onward.
"It's ok Mark go on. It's fun. Come on and smile."
They do not mean any ill will but that only tends to backfire
as it causes pressure on the child and an awkwardness you
have to handle.
Whenever a child is feeling that nervous or that scared,
it is my job as an entertainer to calm the child down and
to make them feel good again. That is what we are there
for. We are entertainers and we bring smile and laughter
and good times. We do not encourage or promote the opposite.
So let me give you an example or scenario and then how one
could handle it in a different manner. The example is you
are doing the chair suspension illusion. You end the show
with it and perform it with the b-day child. The parents
know and the child is the right weight and you cope the
child out ahead of time and see that he is perfect for it.
You get him up there and you work through the routine just
fine. Everything is going well as it should.
As you draw closer to the illusion itself, you see the signs
that the child is nervous and scared and the parent says
something like what I stated above.
What do you do?
First, never carry on in the routine. It is not fair to
the child or to the audience.
You could thank the kid and encourage the kid and shake
his hand and send him back to his seat. That can certainly
be an option.
But what if you changed it around? What if you empower the
child and change the routine 180 degrees? No one knows how
the routine is to play out but yourself.
Instead what if you told the child that he is special and
you did not see it before but HE is magic. That because
of his birthday, he can do most anything with your help.
What if you then placed your jacket on the child or gave
him your magic wand or top at. Something you use in the
show or wear ion the show that is a part of you.
By doing so you tell the child that you are giving him your
magic. Your magic powers and ability will be his and his
to have for a few moments. You then change the routine around
so the child is the one doing the magic and the one will
make a friend float. The child remains on stage and another
child brought up. You emphasize that you are his assistant
and that he will be doing all the magic.
You coach him along the way as to what to do. But the focus
is not on you but 100% on HIM. HE is the one doing the magic
and causing it to happen. Watch the child light up. Watch
the child turn a frown into a smile. Watch him become totally
empowered and feel great.
In this example, you are simply changing the focus. You
do not always have to get all the applause. To make a child
turn from scared and shy and nervous to being empowered,
smiling and feeling great is REAL magic.
The parents will thank you time and again for making their
child's day extra special by changing a bad situation into
an amazing one. You will feel great because you saved the
day, saved the show and brought memories to this child that
he will remember for a long time.
As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your
thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or
suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly
at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you.

11. Magician Brutally Murdered!
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kent Blackmore (Australia)
In
a true tale involving convicts, fire-eating and magic, allegations
of kidnapping, the great San Francisco fires, freak shows,
and a bloody death, John Powell Courtier, "Fire King
and Necromancer" is the central figure.
Previously
documented as the second-earliest performer of magic known
in Australia (1834-1849), the story has now been extended
to include Courtier's years living and performing in the
United States (1850-1876).
Having
started his adult life as a convict, transported from England
into some of Australia's most brutal penal settlements,
John Powell Courtier departed the world in a savage and
brutal manner, but hailed as a respectable and honoured
citizen of his community.
Read
the tale at the Magic In Sydney website, http://sydneymagic.net/HISTORY/COURTIER/courtier.html

12. To His Credit With John Lovick & Seth Kramer
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star
The
Magic Word Podcast
We
begin to wrap up our extended #MagicCereal on magic thievery
this week with John Lovick, whom Gregory Wilson referred
to as "a piece of work" in episode #268. John
goes into great detail to respond to Greg's allegations
by crediting those who were not credited on Greg's three
DVD set. Greg has apparently accused Mr. Lovick of being
a liar on many occasions. In response, he explains that
he has requested that Greg elaborate and enumerate the "lies"
that he has supposedly made. John has yet to receive any
such list or response from Greg.
On
the blog, there is a link where you can download and read
two versions of John Lovick's review of Gregory's DVD set.
One review is the shorter one that appeared in the magic
magazine and the other is the longer version that, due to
space limitations, did not see print. But the latter one
goes into more detail explaining the credit omissions on
the DVD set.
After
the chat with John, we hear from Seth Kramer who was mentioned
by Greg in his podcast as another one who apparently shared
something and was not credited for a card move.
You
can see some photos, read the blog, get some links, listen
to the podcast and download the file at: http://themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/274-lovick-and-kramer
Gregory
contacted me to say that he has not yet listened to any
of the podcasts but wants to "have the last word"
and expose the "lies" that he believes permeated
the rebuttals. I plan to record one last podcast on this
subject (hopefully) with Greg after he has had a chance
to listen to them all and make a valid presentation of the
list where he sees the "lies".
--------------------------------------------
13. Another Spin On The Story With Alex Rangel & Brent
Geris
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star
The
Magic Word Podcast
The
search for "truth" about accusations of Gregory
Wilson being a "magic thief" continues this week
as we hear the responses from more people mentioned by Gregory
in his earlier podcast. We reached out to both Alex Rangel
and Brent Geris to hear their sides of the stories as it
relates to their "proof" and defense of calling
Gregory a thief of intellectual property. In particular,
Alex Rangel thinks that this search for the truth about
Gregory is well overdue as he believes that people have
not openly shared stories about his abusiveness and thievery
for the past 20 years, not unlike those women who have been
silent about Bill Cosby's abuse for so many years
until
now. It was on Alex's "816 Podcast" several years
ago that first called out Gregory and spurred this whole
conversation. Gregory said that Alex had no proof of his
accusations. This week, Alex explains why he had protected
his sources.
Among
others, Gregory also called out Brent Geris, owner and proprietor
of The Magic Apple magic shop in Studio City, California.
In this podcast, Brent defends his position and tells his
side of the story as it relates to the creation and marketing
of his effect "Spinout" versus Gregory's trick,
"Revolution".
Lots
of stuff to enjoy in this week's podcast as we continue
the #MagicCereal all brought to you by our new sponsor,
ManageGigs.com. You can watch a couple videos, see some
photos, read the blog, listen online and download the MP3
files at: http://themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/273-rangel-and-geris
Keep
the discussion going in your magic club meetings and personal
discussions with your fellow magicians and online on our
Facebook page and Twitter. It is important that we shine
the light on what constitutes "magic thievery"
and entitlement. For example, ponder this: just because
you an explanation of a trick on YouTube and didn't pay
for it, does that mean that it is free for you to use in
your paid shows?

15. S.A.M. Contest Of Magic Experience In Indy
--------------------------------------------
Message by Mark Weidhaas (US)
We've
added much more than the word "experience" to
the contest. We're focused on making this the best experience
for contestants and all those attending our convention.
Contestants are important performers in our convention and
will be treated as such. If selected to be a part of the
S.A.M. Contest of Magic Experience you will receive one
complimentary registration as well as a cash stipend.
You'll
also be treated to a special lunch with many of the notable
artists at the convention. Just them and you. That's just
the beginning. Prizes will not be limited to the traditional
S.A.M. scoring system either, in fact there will be nothing
traditional about the prizes. We'd like to have some secrets
so the details on prizes will be announced at the convention.
Applications
are only accepted online: HERE (www.magicsam.com)
The
Experience is comprised of the Fr. Cyprian Murray Stage
Contest and the Dr. Paul Critelli Close-Up Contest, both
limited to 5 contestants. All applications received before
March 28th will be considered by the selection committee
for 8 of the 10 slots (4 stage and 4 close-up). On April
4th these 8 slots will be announced.
All
applicants who were not selected as well as any applicants
who missed the deadline can be considered for one of the
two remaining slots. These final slots will be chosen by
the public via an online vote on the S.A.M. Facebook page.
Voting will take place May 5th - 8th and the two winners
will be announced on May 9th. Stay connected with updates
on the contest by liking the S.A.M. facebook page.

17. David Ben Pledged To Shave His Hair - Cancer Research
--------------------------------------------
Message by James Alan
On
February 4, Canadian magician David Ben has pledged to shave
his hair - his rather outlandish hair - to raise money and
awareness for cancer research. His goal: a quarter of a
million dollars for the Princess Margaret Hospital Cancer
Foundation. The outreach is part of a larger fundraising
campaign called #NoHairSelfie (www.nohairselfie.com)
Experts at the Card Table. He is the star of critically
acclaimed shows including The Conjuror, Natural Magick and
Tricks. He was the sole protege of Ross Bertram, one of
the original Stars of Magic. He is the Artistic Director
of Magicana, a performing arts organization, based in Toronto,
dedicated to the exploration of magic as a performing art.
David has lost multiple family members to the disease.
Donations
are currently being accepted at www.nohairselfie.com/davidben.
Contributions in Canada and the United States are also eligible
for a tax receipt. We would encourage everyone to consider
a contribution - any amount helps - and help make cancer
disappear.
